Hi, I'm Brian
I run ByteTempest, a one-person cybersecurity practice in Hampton Roads. I help small dental and medical practices understand and reduce the risk to their patients' information.
I bring more than six years of cyber defense experience, including two years leading a threat hunting team that investigates and contains real-world intrusions. That work includes the attacks small practices face most often, such as compromised Microsoft 365 email accounts.

Why small practices
A three-dentist office holds the same kind of sensitive records as a hospital and answers to the same HIPAA Security Rule. The hospital has a security department. The dental office has an office manager who is also doing payroll, scheduling and the phones.
Most of what protects a small practice isn't expensive: multi-factor sign-in, backups ransomware can't reach, one login per person, and staff who know what a phishing email looks like. What's missing is usually someone to look at the whole picture, write it down, and say what to do first. That's the job I do.
